PROBLEM
The following error is encountered either during installation/upgrade, in the Product's Installation Log file, or in Window's Event Logs:
"Error 1321: The installer has insufficient permissions to modify the file"
Product Installation Logs can be located:
- VIPRE Home: %Temp%\VIPREInstall.log (or VIPREPremiumInstall.log)
- VIPRE Business: C:\ProgramData\VIPRE Business Agent\logs\Agent-MSI.csv (Other OS/Version Locations)
- VIPRE Email Security: %Temp%\MSI*.log
ENVIRONMENT
- VIPRE Business
- VIPRE Business Premium
- VIPRE Endpoint Security
- VIPRE Email Security
- All Supported Environments
SOLUTION
This Error indicates a problem due to insufficient permissions to remove the specified file. The easiest way to resolve this trouble is to remove the troubled item. Navigate to the folder location indicated by the error and attempt to manually delete the folder/file.
If an error about insufficient permissions is produced, the permissions for the file may need to be reset.
If the problem remains, attempt creating a new User Account that has administrative privileges as follows:
- Go to Start > Control Panel > Users/Accounts
- Select "New User"
- Name the Account and ensure it is set as an Administrator.
- Select "Create Account"
- Log-Out of the Account currently being used.
- Log-In to the newly created Account
CAUSE
Many of these errors can occur with general computer usage. Uninstalling applications, applying updates, and sometimes manual changes to some Windows components can cause these problems to surface.
